Ministries

  • Christians in Action -

Monthly activities and trips planned for all.  Watch for them on the church calendar!

  • Protective Payee Program -

Description of Ministry: Protective Payees are volunteers who support individuals with developmental disabilities to live on their own in the community by receiving their income to pay their bills and balance their checkbooks.  In some cases, a monthly visit to the client's home occurs.

This program is managed by staff members of the Arc of Yakima County, that provide training and ongoing support to volunteer payees.

A STATE PATROL BACKGROUND CHECK IS REQUIRED.

Englewood Christian Church is currently in need of 4 to 6 new payees, each to support 2 or 3 people with developmental disabilities.  There will be a 2-hour training scheduled when the needed volunteers have agreed to become payees, probably in late July or early August 2010.

If you are interested in volunteering, contact Sue Scott, 697-7859 for more information.

  • Global Ministries -

Description:  Englewood Christian Church is embarking on a journey to become a Global Mission Congregation.  We will begin to learn about the Disciples' global mission heritage and current mission strategy.  After evaluating our involvement, we will complete a check list of ideas for action we might take.  Then, we will choose a few ideas for action that seem realistic for us.  Finally, we will commit to take action with a specific plan in partnership with Global Ministries and other Disciples and United Christian Church congregations.

Contact Rev. David Helseth at the church office, 966-6550; or Jim Silsbee, (509) 469-2170.

  • Bible Study Opportunities -

Description:  From September through May, we have two ongoing Bible Study groups.  Wednesday Morning Bible Study is led by Pastor David Helseth at 10:30AM in the Fireside Room.

On Sunday mornings at 9:30AM, one adult education opportunity is led by Pastor Helseth, using the     lectionary Bible passage that he will use in his sermon that morning.  This group gathers in Sunday school rooms 5 & 6.

If you are interested in either of these classes, just show up at the designated time and you will be welcome.  Sorry, we do not offer summer Bible Studies at this time.

Contact Pastor David Helseth, 966-6550, with questions.

  • Prayer Shawl Ministry -

We give prayer shawls to individuals who are going through illness or other difficult times.  Several of the women of our congregation knit or crochet these prayer shawls and place them on the table in the narthex.  When someone needs comfort and support, we bless a shawl by passing it through the congregation during worship.  Each person touches it and silently prays for the person who will receive it along with our love and prayers.

Anyone who enjoys knitting or crocheting is invited to take some yarn from the display in the narthex, or use your own, and make one of these prayer shawls to add to our collection.

  • Food Bank Ministry -

Volunteers are needed on Wednesdays to bring in food (unloading), and on Thursdays to fill bags with food in preparation for Fridays when volunteers are needed to distribute bags of food to over 300 families.

On the 4th Sunday of each month, you are encouraged to bring non-perishable food to church with you and place it in the grocery cart.

Contact Betty Clark, 877-4137 for more information.

  •  Hospitality -

Description:  Hospitality includes making visitors feel welcome and included.  It means paying attention to who is new and who has been worshiping with us for a while.  It can also include visiting those who are homebound, ill, or dealing with grief and loss.  In the bigger picture, hospitality is also serving our homeless shelter during the winter months.

Pastor David will offer training for members of the congregation who feel called to provide hospitality on Sunday mornings.  Also, we need a few people to visit those who have special needs.

Call Pastor David Helseth in the church office, 966-6550 for more information.

  • Prayer Groups

Description:  Small prayer groups of 3 to 5 people will be forming soon for spiritual growth and mutual support through ten sessions that include checking in with how each person is doing, and then a Bible passage and a short reading that emphasizes on area of need in our church each time we meet.  Prayers are then offered for the church and for each other.  Length of each session is typically 60 to 90 minutes.  Once we know how many are interested, we will proceed with dates and times to begin meeting.

To sign up, use the sign up sheet on the Welcome Table in the narthex.

In the wake of the worst flooding in Pakistan's history, Church World Service is responding over a wide geographic area, part of a decades-long commitment CWS has made to the country.  The cornerstone of the response is to provide direct assistance to nearly 100,000 individuals, which includes food and non-food items, shelter kits and health care.  By early August, CWS had already distributed some 70 tons of food items in Balochistan and Khyber Pakthoonkhwa.  Read more.
